Submersible deep well pumps: components and selection

Published by SMART

What is a submersible deep well pump

The pump is installed inside the well below the water level and pushes water upward through the discharge pipes. It is connected to a submersible electric motor suited to underwater operation. These systems support groundwater extraction, irrigation, industrial applications and water supply.

Pumping system components

  • A submersible electric motor and a multistage pump body.
  • An electrical cable suited to the water environment and discharge pipes.
  • A control and protection panel, with sensors according to the system design.

Start with the well data

Selection starts with total well depth, static water level, pumping water level and bore diameter. Required water volume is also reviewed for the agricultural, industrial, residential or desalination application.

Flow and total head

Required head is linked to water level, discharge elevation and friction losses in the pipes. These data and the required flow inform selection of the pump, motor, stages and associated equipment, rather than relying on motor power alone.

Materials and operation

The original guide highlights corrosion resistance, insulation quality and material compatibility with the water. Installing the pump inside the well reduces the need for external space and can reduce noise compared with surface pumps. Actual performance depends on selection, installation and operating conditions.

Routine care

  • Check cables, connections and electrical protection.
  • Avoid dry running and review the operating water level.
  • Arrange scheduled maintenance and well cleaning when required by specialists.
